There is a range of providers within Gloucestershire that are able to provide hot, chilled and frozen meals that you can arrange for yourself and there are many activities such as luncheon clubs that you can attend where meals are provided.
Community meals or ‘meals on wheels’ are cooked, hot meals provided to people in their own homes to assist them to live as independently as possible. For more information on organising community meals for yourself, a friend or relative, or for details of activities where meals can be provided.
Gloucestershire County Council has a contract with apetito Ltd to provide community meals, at a subsidised cost, to people who are assessed as having an eligible need for them. apetito can supply hot meals seven days a week and is able to cater for specific dietary or cultural requirements. Subsidised hot meal delivery may be provided on a temporary basis if someone is unable to maintain their nutritional needs either independently or with support from family/friends, or by attending lunch clubs. The subsidised community meal provision is a short-term provision; in most cases it will be provided while someone recovers from an illness or setback or completes a period of reablement. The intention is, where possible, to support the individual to move onto more independent provision within six weeks.
You need to meet either of the following criteria to receive community meals services from the Council:
1. You are unable to heat prepared meals due to illness, frailty or disability, such as:
a debilitating medical condition;
considerable mobility issues;
confusion due to dementia, Alzheimer’s or other
similar conditions; or
2. You have recently been discharged from hospital following illness and require short-term help to maintain your nutritional wellbeing as you are unable to prepare food for yourself or have no next of kin to support you.
